Useful For

​Measurements of lactic acid are useful in the diagnosis and treatment of lactic acidosis (abnormally high acidity of the blood).

This test code is specifically for Sepsis Protocol patient testing of arterial lactates.  It will order both a baseline arterial lactate (LACT-A) and a 3 hour post baseline lactate (LACA3H).

Collection Processing Instructions
Note: Test is only orderable at St. Clare's and St. Joseph's Hospitals.
 
​Collect Gray Top Tube and transport to the lab promptly after collection.  Centrifuge and remove plasma from the cells within 60 minutes.  Specimen must be drawn WITHOUT a tourniquet and WITHOUT hand clencing.
 
If the baseline LACT-A is <=2.0 mmol/L, the LACA3H is discontinued. 
If the LACT-A is >=2.1, then the LACA3H is collected and reported.
