Useful For
Urine bicarbonate may be useful in patients with renal tubular acidosis.  These patients are unable to adequately acidify their urine and tend to have a high urine pH in the 6-7 range with serum bicarbonate levels at the lower limit of normal or slightly acidotic (15-20 mmol/L range).  ​

Collection Processing Instructions

Please call the 24 Hour Lab (ext. 16363) prior to the collection so that they can schedule the performance of this procedure.
10 mL random urine collected and received in the lab in an anaerobic state. To accomplish an anaerobic state, nursing staff should obtain the sample with a syringe from a Foley catheter (no air bubbles) or collect the sample in a cup containing mineral oil (then immediately transfer the specimen to a urine tek tube maintaining the mineral oil top layer).​
