Send one specimen tube to Hematology for a hematocrit. Thoroughly mix the second specimen tube by inversion and freeze if not analyzed within four hours. EDTA whole blood is the only acceptable specimen type.
If sending to another testing location: Perform a hematocrit on the specimen before freezing and submit the hematocrit result with the frozen specimen. Alternately: submit an additional non-frozen EDTA whole blood sample (LTT) for hematocrit measurement at Marshfield Laboratories. Label specimens appropriately. Note: if only a frozen sample is submitted, and no hematocrit available, the performing department will use a 'standard' hematocrit value to determine the RBC folate.
High doses of exogenous biotin (also termed Vitamin B7, Vitamin H or Coenzyme R) may interfere with this assay. It is recommended that patients refrain from consuming any multivitamin or supplement containing biotin for at least 72 hours prior to collection of a blood sample.
