Useful For
This test is used to identify individuals with Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency. G6PD deficiency may cause susceptibility to hemolytic anemia after ingestion of certain drugs such as the anti-malarial drug primaquine.

Interpretation
Interpretations
G6PD deficiency in red cells is the basis for certain drug induced hemolytic anemias, especially when exposed to anti-malarial compounds such as primaquine. Additionally, genetic deficiencies in G6PD are seen in African American and Mediterranean nationalities. A high frequency of G6PD deficiency occurs in individuals with sickle cell trait.
