22873 Metanephrine Fractionation, Urine Random

Metanephrine Fractionation, Urine Random
Test Code: MET-RND
Synonyms/Keywords
Metanephrine, Normetanephrine; Metanephrines/Creatinine Ratio
Test Components
Urine Metanephrine, Normetanephrine and Creatinine give a Metanephrine/Creatinine Ratio
Useful For

Quantitation of urine normetanephrine (NMN) and metanephrine (MN), collectively referred to as “metanephrines,” together with plasma metanephirne levels is useful as the initial screen to aid in the diagnosis and follow-up of catecholamine-producing tumors, pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma. 24-hr urine is highly recommended.

Specimen Requirements
Fasting Required Specimen Type Preferred Container/Tube Acceptable Container/Tube Specimen Volume Specimen Minimum Volume
(allows for 1 repeat)
Pediatric Minimum Volume
(no repeat)
No Urine Sage cup with 0.1 g sulfamic acid
50 mg sulfamic acid aliquot tube or acidify with dilute hydrochloric acid to a pH <5
10 mL 5 mL urine 5 mL urine
Collection Processing Instructions
Collection instruction: If random specimens are collected unpreserved, specimen must be hand carried to the lab for immediate addition of 0.1 grams of sulfamic acid. If preferred or acceptable container preservatives are unavailable, the unpreserved sample can be immediately frozen and transported frozen to Marshfield labs.

Patients should be off Buspirone ("Buspar") for 72 hours before collection as the drug may cause false elevations of metanephrine.
