Myoglobin, Urine Quantitative
Test Code: MYO
Synonyms/Keywords
Myo, Urine
Useful For
Myoglobin is used as an indicator of rhabdomyolysis (muscle breakdown) although it is neither sensitive nor specific for this disorder.
Specimen Requirements
Specimen Type Preferred Container/Tube Acceptable Container/Tube Specimen Volume Specimen Minimum Volume
(allows for 1 repeat)
Pediatric Minimum Volume
(no repeat)
Urine Sterile container/cup 5 - 10 mL 1.0 mL 0.25 mL
Collection Processing Instructions

Myoglobin is unstable at the native pH of urine even when frozen. Adjust urine to pH 7-9 by addition of sodium hydroxide or sodium carbonate solution. Alternatively, add 8-10 mL of urine to a "Uric Acid Aliquot Tube".  See aliquotting of 24-Hour Urines for Multiple Tests.
This tube containing dried sodium carbonate when filled with this volume will raise the pH to the desired range. Store refrigerated overnight or freeze for longer storage.

Specimen Stability Information
Specimen Type Temperature Time
Urine Refrigerated 48 hours
Frozen >48 hours
Interference
Human anti-mouse antibodies (HAMA) may be present in samples from patients who have received immunotherapy utilizing monoclonal antibodies. Additionally, other heterophile antibodies such as human anti-goat antibodies, may be present in patient samples . Carefully evaluate results from patients suspected of having such antibodies.
